that sucks. In my own neck of the woods, we have Mills College, which has not only a preschool but an elementary school and a girls middle school. It was set to close 4-5 years ago and was saved by Northeastern acquiring it. Positive in certain ways, but it's no longer a women's college or SLAC.

This may well be true elsewhere, but Hampshire closing also means the loss of its excellent Early Learning Center childcare program. Both my kids went there, and it was so much more than daycare

This is a real tragedy. We cannot afford to lose these fine schools. Colleges were not intended to be job-training academies, but to really educate our students. We will regret this.

Losing SLACs (small liberal arts colleges) is absolutely a sign of American academia's decline and the gutting of the humanities in particular. I'm pretty sure SLACs are a uniquely American phenomenon. Most countries don't have hundreds of small, non-research-oriented colleges dedicated to teaching.
