I think out of anything, modern Star Trek's biggest failure is not figuring out how to thrive in a post-BSG, post-Expanse era of sci-fi television. I'm not just blaming Kurtzman, because the Berman era had that issue too with Enterprise, and how that took forever to realize genre TV was changing.

I've been saying for years that the Trek you want to see should be the Trek you make on your own, bc Paramount isn't going to suddenly become a great owner after all these decades. Write your fan comics, novels, films, etc. Create your stories & characters, carve out your corner of the galaxy.🖖🏻
