To show how bad things are — and, no, I am not even saying this is new, but — here is the latest from the Trump admin on conditions at the Broadview ICE facility outside Chicago. A humane govt would be addressing bedding and food before starting detentions — not needing time after a TRO to do so.

The fact that Texas, the second largest state in America, pays their legislators $600 a month (plus a per diem when in session) and gives members barely enough money to hire 2 or 3 staffers is an existential threat to our democracy.

I was 20" tall and 7.5 pounds at birth. A "historical fact" that has just about as much relevance for identifying me now as a trans person's sex at birth.

My birth certificate, like the birth certificates of basically every other adoptee, doesn't include my bio-parents in any way. Weirdly there's no talk about how that is some sort of corruption of biological reality.

The more democratic elements of the American constitutional and economic order are actually throwing up road blocks to Trumpism. Protests and boycotts and low level courts and juries and cetera. Elite actors on the other hand are all too frequently caving. Fascinating study in who actually cares!

i’d also say that the GOP’s obsession with this gives candidates an opportunity to articulate and stand up for their values. “i refuse to make anyone feel like they don’t belong in my [state/city/community]. and i want everyone to live the best life they can achieve [insert policy slogan]”

I am taking particular pleasure in the complete collapse of trans-as-unbeatable-wedge-issue narrative this morning. It might be an 80-20 issue in voters minds, but it has to be on voters minds to matter. The results in VA demonstrate that it is very much not on voters minds.

Watching Mamdani's victory speech, I'm struck by his—and his campaign's—unabashed vision of the US as an immigrant society, a culture built from the ground up from diversity. It is a complete rejection and reversal of the search for a white-washed homogeneity that the political right projects.

I have actually not seen Mamdani give a formal speech and what I’ll say is that unlike so many of his peers he is not trying to mimic anyone in his delivery. He is simply being himself and it is very effective.

And the defining feature of White Christian Nationalism — which is now just about completely intertwined with Trumpism — is that any exercise of political power by those who aren't part of the "elect" is inherently illegitimate and should face violent reprisal.

Traditional American politics is premised on the notion that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win and you have to deal with that. But Trumpism is premised on the notion that any result where you don’t win is illegitimate, unlawful, fraud, criminal. You can’t negotiate with people like that.

Body cams apparently show Border Patrol agents joking about tossing tear gas at a nonviolent protest, with one agent saying "Hey, throw it [tear gas] for fun." Agents then tried to drive away, but there was apparently so much tear gas they were overcome, couldn't drive, and had to leave on foot.

Like a cursory read of protestant teaching from the early years of American society makes pretty clear why this is such a constant theme in our culture. The idea that God chooses who to make rich and it's their job to punish people for being poor weaves through all of it.
