Really good and nuanced piece on landmarking in NYC. Not mentioned in this piece, but particularly relevant was that for the Adams admin these districts (which were rushed through!) were explicitly part of a political trade.

If Paladino had said that Jews amounted to a fifth column and should be removed from the country, Menin would be one of many in elected office calling for her to be expelled from the Council. That it was about Muslims is just as heinous, yet all we get is this lukewarm response.

Interestingly the author couldn't find any evidence that historic districting led to the practice...only that the types of neighborhoods where it takes place are just the type of places that we tend to designate.

Under the Northwest Side Preservation Ordinance, developers have to pay steep fees to demolish existing residential to build more dense residential but pay $0 to demolish something like this to replace it with single-family homes. Make it make sense.

I feel like I just found a gold nugget! During my daily streetview ambling I just now discovered a 1925 apartment building designed by RM Schindler that was thought to have been demolished for the 101 freeway. But it wasn’t! It was *moved.* (first screenshot is from US Modernist)

I voted YES on all 6 ballot proposals. I support 2-5 and encourage other New Yorkers to vote for them as well, so that we can build more housing and stop conservative councilmembers like Vickie Paladino and Darlene Mealy from blocking developments in their districts.

I often complain about historic preservation orgs in NYC, but the Municipal Art Society is truly a rare bright spot in an otherwise broken field. They were strong supporters of City of Yes and SO PLEASED to see an endorsement of Questions 2,3&4 on this years ballot
