I find this type of comment so elitist. It IS the most inconvenient and stressful form of long distance public transportation, yet people still use it in droves because they have no other choice. Are we going to just pretend that's not an insane class divide worth highlighting?

For all the seeming hate we are seeing today about how MetroCard never worked well, I think it's worth remembering that it was, in fact, a pretty groundbreaking piece of technology at the time. The fact that it *ever* worked reliably is a testament to its engineering at the time

So, the passenger had to be able to swipe their card _themselves_, holding on to the card the whole time. Why does this matter? MetroCard, like all card-based AFC systems, stores the card value _on the card_. This means that every swipe is actually a complete read-verify-write cycle.

But it was the first where the passenger kept hold of the card while passing through the turnstile; this was both a massive design evolution and a substantial technical challenge.

Social media isn't a great place for nuance or context, but despite that I want to take a moment today to talk about some of the things that made the MetroCard special in its day.

Gotta nip this kind of corruption in the bud because it is a form of corruption. A good start would be to get rid of all parking placards and to severely restrict the number of cars that can park at City Hall. You work for the city? Take transit like most people in this city do.

Another thought on this – I had this debate with a friend a few months ago, but is it a NYC-centric view of the world to think that our green-and-white street signs, despite being fairly generic, are still pretty recognizably NYC? I feel like this *exact* format w/ rectangular signs isn't common

I feel like NYC is one of the only cities in the country where block numbering is rarely exposed on signage, and nobody ever uses it in common parlance (you never see like the XX00 block of Y Street here) – the closest we get is Queens addressing but that's still weird
