Black women are making decisions about our hair in an information vacuum and in a society that still polices our hair in schools and workplaces. As Paul Mooney quipped, if it’s relaxed, they’re relaxed. If it’s nappy, they ain’t happy. Our hair is personal AND political. And we deserve answers.

This isn’t a personal failure on the part of Black women who wear these protective styles. The FDA does not regulate braiding hair. No testing. No warning labels. We’re just buying the hair, installing it, and wearing it for weeks against our scalps.
