To put this loan amount in perspective: California is spending $500 million to widen a 10-mile stretch of Highway 37 in the northern Bay Area (through a wetland, no less). But $750 million to save the *entire* Bay Area’s transit systems is apparently infeasible.

Let's get to the results. SF only issued warnings for the first several months of the program, along with putting up plenty of warning signage. This had a *huge* result! On the 33 speed camera locations, drivers traveling >11 mph over the speed limit fell ~75%! That was just with warnings!

Even just 5 years ago, CADEM embracing a position like this was unthinkable. The party was too dominated by anti-housing zealots and suburban homeowners. Today, the vote to support SB79 was 111 to 62. It’s nothing short of a sea change.

Was at the dog park in the Outer Richmond last night and folk were talking about how they weren’t supportive of the Sunset Dunes park because they need to get to Skyline sometimes. Turns out they didn’t know the Sloat->Skyline connection was falling into the ocean and slated for closure.

People really struggle to comprehend the difference between the folk who build housing and the folk who rent it out. High housing prices generally does not mean higher profits for housing developers.

this is especially relevant for certain kinds of progressive approaches to public investment of all kinds, because they fail to recognize that every delay to a project itself costs money it is not *free* to wait and do another study, another public comment period, another community engagement

BIG HOUSING NEWS: The Senate passed our bill (SB 79) to allow more housing near high quality transit & giving transit agencies more authority to build homes on their own land. We need more housing & focusing it around transit makes so much sense. It’ll mean more housing & more transit ridership.

I have a piece in the
@sfchronicle.com
today about why San Francisco should copy New York's successful congestion pricing model to revitalize downtown:

N.Y. is using this controversial idea to fight traffic, fund transit and bring life back downtown. S.F. can, too
Every so often, policymakers are lucky enough to find a rare win-win that makes everyone better off. Congestion pricing is one of those ideas.

My takeaway: rich folk drive more because rich neighborhoods rarely discourage driving. Meanwhile denser neighborhoods often have less parking, which induces mode shift.
