Traffic safety and community policing was top of mind this past month at SFPD Park Station which covers the Haight Ashbury and NOPA neighborhoods. Here are some key changes being made:

FIFA World Cup is coming to San Francisco, so I brought some of the kids of the Tenderloin to see the official trophy at City Hall! Last year the first soccer park opened in the TL, sponsored by Street Soccer USA, so it was a joy to bring the kids who play there to visit this moment in history.

Earlier this year, seniors in a Tenderloin building were left without heat, so our office sprang into action.

The Fillmore came together this weekend to celebrate the unveiling of Carmen Johnson Way. Carmen was a neighborhood leader who dedicated her life to serving others for years. She worked as a pediatric nurse and served on the board of MLK-Marcus Garvey Apartments.

Was an honor to meet Senator Mark Kelly this weekend. Gulf War veteran, NASA Pilot, gun control advocate, and now Arizona Senator. In these times, leaders like Senator Kelly are who we need standing up for our democracy. Thank you for the invitation Assm Buffy Wicks!

The Tenderloin Eid Street Fair was a joy to behold. Thousands of Muslims visiting our neighborhood to celebrate with performances by MC Abdul, a youth bazaar, halal tacos and pizza, pony rides and more. Events like these is how we revitalize and reenergize our neighborhood.

No Kings 3 brought thousands of Americans from across the Bay to San Francisco. Thank you all for standing up for our democracy. The Board of Supervisors continues to have your back as we legislate ICE Free Zones to ICE Identification laws to defend your civil liberties in these times.

Supervisor Chen and myself are coauthoring legislation that will demand identification of ICE agents in San Francisco.

Over the past several weeks, our office worked with city partners to address a persistent sewer backup that was disrupting daily life for residents on Delmar Street. What started as a frustrating issue—complete with delays and a few false starts— led us to the root of the problem, quite literally.

In honor of Women's History Month, we recognized Tatiana Alabsi for her nearly decade of service to the Tenderloin and children and families who call it home.

Today we honored Stephen Tennis - a community leader in the Tenderloin - with a commemorative street renaming to mark his legacy. Stephen was the first park captain for the Tenderloin Safe Passage program, a resilient tenant advocate, and an amazing human to so many in the neighborhood.

Eid Mubarak San Francisco! It's an honor to serve our city, and represent our virbant Muslim community from the Tenderloin to Western Addition in District 5 We'll be hosting the largest Eid celebration in the city with the Eid Street Fair next Saturday, March 28 from 11AM to 4PM in the Tenderloin!

We're nearing completion of a $36 million renovation of Japantown's Peace Plaza! Led by community leaders including Jon Osaki, the project represents the city's largest investment in the neighborhood in over 50 years.

Congratulations to American Conservatory Theater on a phenomenal run of @paranormalonstage in San Francisco. The American Conservatory Theater is approaching its 60th anniversary, and this week broke box office records with the Paranormal Play being their highest selling production of all time.

The women who have come forward this week, including Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguía, and Debra Rojas, have carried these experiences for years. Sharing them now requires immense strength, and I stand with them and all survivors, unequivocally.

Mayor Lurie and I joined the youth of the Tenderloin at the center we helped establish for them last year. In partnership with United Playaz and TLCBD , we helped create the first youth violence prevention program in the neighborhood, which officially kicked off earlier this year.

As we close out Ramadan, we honored Pakwan at the Board of Supervisors today with a commendation in recognition of over two decades of serving the Tenderloin and broader Muslim community.

Today music, orchestra (and a little bit of Kpop Demon Hunters) was playing in the Tenderloin for our families and children! One Found Sound performed at the Tenderloin Museum this afternoon, showcasing small chamber performances and interactive story telling for the Tenderloin community.

We're revitalizing the Fillmore Corridor with a $100K grant for small businesses! In partnership with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, we are announcing a storefront opportunity grant to support small businesses that activate empty storefronts on Fillmore Street.

Key public safety initiatives we’ve worked on over the last month in the Tenderloin.

The Vera Institute of Justice wrote about our ICE Free Zone Ordinance this week as a case study for the nation. Supervisor Chen and I worked on this legislation together to provide a model for how local municipalities can protect city property from being commandeered by entities, including ICE.

Today we honored Michael Vuong of Boys & Girls Club for his two decades of service to the organization and to the Tenderloin.

Today the County Transportation Authority voted unanimously to support research of federal legislation by Congressman Mullin for AV safety. As we saw last week in our hearing into autonomous vehicle operations during the blackout, there is a need for further improvements to AV safety protocols.

At the Lower Haight Neighborhood Association today we discussed restoration of our urban canopies. Earlier this year, 7 trees on Waller Street were erroneously placed on emergency removal. The Lower Haight community rightfully pushed back.

Beautiful day in the Panhandle as over a thousand Deadheads gathered for the Hard to Handle concert. A free Grateful Dead mini music fest put on by community for community, it's great to see our neighborhoods come alive for music, fun, and sun!

An honor to attend this year's Chinese New Year Parade for the Year of the Horse! This year I hosted Siu Han Cheung, an organizer with @tndc.bsky.social and beloved member of our Tenderloin community. The city was truly alive, and it was a delight to have Eileen Gu as our Grand Marshall this year!

Wrapped up our monthly coffee chat this week in NOPA! Met with constituents who had recently moved to San Francisco as immigrants to long-term residents who had been here for decades. We discussed housing assistance to public safety, as well as our mutual love for the city we all call home.

Permit streamlining works. Four years ago, it took 605 days to get to a building permit. Now it takes 280 days. We're still the slowest city to build in the nation (many are 100 days faster), but this proves initiatives like Mayor Lurie's PermitSF are working.

Today we joined the launch of Community Streets - a neighborhood data platform and community building toolkit to help residents throughout the city organize block parties and advocate for safer streets.

So exciting to support Glide in opening "The Shop" - a barbershop in the Tenderloin, that is actually more than just a place to get a haircut. Glide's The Shop provides a safe space for those in the Tenderloin - pairing barber services with health education, active listening, and direct linkages.

Why are 50,000 housing units entitled in San Francisco, but not breaking ground? Last year, I authorized a first-of-its kind study from our city's analyst division: comparing our city's post-entitlement permitting system with other cities to understand how to fix this. Here's what we learned:

Today with Fire Chief Crispin I hosted an Iftar for our Muslim first responders at Shalimar in the heart of the Tenderloin. Our first responders come from all over the world - from Afghanistan to Eritrea - representing so many diverse communities in San Francisco.

The escalating military actions in Iran are deeply concerning. War is not a path to freedom. Regime change - from Afghanistan to Iraq - has never been successfully imposed by force. It must be led by people, not warplanes.

Broke my fast this evening with the Yemeni families at 201 Turk and Alsabeel mosque in the Tenderloin. 201 Turk run by CCDC is a gem of a community in the heart of the TL, and Mike Vuong and Boys & Girls Club were incredible hosts for all the kids (outdoor movie night included!)

We stand by San Francisco-based companies that are resisting coercion by the federal government to be used for mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry. Supervisor Sherrill and I are introducing a resolution at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors next week to affirm this right.
