University of California — the greatest university system in the nation — receives $17B annually from the federal government in health care, science & student aid funding. The more Trump tears things down — especially on public health & science — the more California will step up to take care of business at the state level. Trump is destroying the CDC & making it harder for people to get vaccines. So California is picking up the slack — now moving toward our own CDC!

Last night, the Legislature passed & sent to the Governor our bill to authorize a 2026 Bay Area regional revenue measure to fund our public transportation systems, SB 63. We need these systems to be strong. Let’s get it done!

Last day of our legislative session! We just voted to authorize a MASSIVE investment in regional & statewide rail, including major rail upgrades in the Bay Area & a renewed commitment to get high speed rail done. It’s exciting & gives me hope for more & better public transit in California. Onward!

The obsession with tying trans people to shootings is vile & dangerous. First they try to say the shooter might be trans & WSJ amplifies that lie. Once that fell apart, they pivot to “he lived with a trans person.” Even if true, who cares? It’s McCarthyism & truly disgusting.

As trans people are under assault in this country — e.g., being falsely blamed for the Kirk murder — California is strengthening protections for them. Two bills I’m authoring (SB 59 & 497) to protect trans people’s health & court record privacy passed the Legislature & are heading to the Governor.

My AI safety bill received final Senate passage & is on its way to the Governor! SB 53 requires large AI labs to be transparent about their safety protocols, creates whistleblower protections for employs at AI labs & creates a public cloud to expand compute access (CalCompute).
