Also, bless Alan Moore cuz that man loves comics so much, he still wants to do them. Even though he talks about how the industry is filled with sharks, he still loves the medium. People misunderstand him when they say he hated comics. No, he hates THE INDUSTRY. Two different things.

Creators are drowning. I, personally, am drowning. And on a scale of lucky to unlucky, I'd still place myself in the MIDDLE.

I think the reason why there is such a focus on the evils of "work for hire" in comics (instead of voice acting, etc.) is that you can no longer put food on the table with comics. These characters are bringing in millions while their creators cannot pay for groceries or rent. Or funeral expenses.

All they have to offer is the chance to work on their characters. And this was once VERY compelling. Because it was the only place to leave a mark on the characters you loved as a child. But now you can make that mark in TV. Film. Animation. Prose. Fashion. Music.

And that leaves an industry where no one wants to be. You can't work your way up. You can't get your head above water. You'll never get a "big break." They won't even offer you "exposure."

Comic companies don't want to pay royalties, but now they don't even want to make new industry "rock stars." They don't even want to provide an industry where a career can be built. There will be no new Stan Lee. Or Jim Lee either.

Studios lament the loss of "company men" without looking at the differences in the ways Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were treated. You get "company men" by being good to the men who work for the company.

The only bigger con job was selling fanbois the idea that greedy creators tried to take away their beloved superheros when they asked for proper compensation.

There have been dozens and dozens of 1970s and 1980s comics creators needing GoFundMes to pay their medical bills while WB and Disney raked in billions with their creations.

From Jack Kirby to Steve Gerber to Alan Moore to pretty everybody else who ever worked for DC or Marvel, "Work for Hire" is one of the biggest con jobs ever pulled.
