this is such a great encapsulation of what the various factions of the reactionary right want. i might add that they envision themselves as slave masters and the rest of us, in one way or another, as their slaves.

Funny how after every SCOTUS ruling striking down some protection from government abuse, the officials those protections restrained — cops, prosecutors, Republican state electeds — immediately start acting in the precise manner SCOTUS assured us they no longer do.

The Mariners have got to stop subbing out their better bats in the middle innings trying to play matchup. The lineup turns over and in the highest leverage points you’re stuck with Rob Refsnyder facing Mason Miller. It just has to change.

At this point, solving climate change is cheaper than not solving it -- not only on some grand 50 year time horizon, but tomorrow, today, immediately. Soving climate change *is* affordability. Maybe Dems should tell voters about that.

The South as a region poses a challenge. But the Supreme Court has become a wretched institution, a full-blown threat to the existence of a pluralistic, multi-ethnic liberal democracy in this country.

The problem—which both the GOP and the milquetoast institutionalists seem to not be grappling with here—is that the more you close off avenues of political change through the democratic process, the more you push people to see extra-institutional mechanisms as their only option

Man, that sounds terrible. Killed with impunity by agents of the state for just being on the street and protesting? Hard to see how regimes like that can continue to claim a popular mandate.

Why is it always a problem that liberals are over-represented in higher education or media but it's not a problem that conservatives are over-represented in the military or law enforcement? What's the military doing to solve its catastrophic viewpoint discrimination problem?

This morning's administrative stays in the mifepristone case and tonight's order immediately issuing the judgment in the Louisiana redistricting case both provide yet further evidence of

Two procedural moves by the justices on Monday reinforce criticisms that the Court behaves differently in otherwise similar cases based solely on the ideological/partisan valence of the dispute.

anyway the most striking thing about alito, thomas and gorsuch's pissy response to jackson is that they — and the other republican justices — seem to really buy their own bullshit. they really believe that we can't plainly see what they're doing.

I write about people who became famous for saying and doing horrible things so I routinely get asked this question. "Did they really believe it?" Look, I get the curiosity, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what's in their hearts. They put evil into the world.

Yes. The text of the 14th and 15th Amendments explicitly gives the power to decide how to enforce these amendments to Congress. The Civil Rights Movement was an attempt to enforce the Reconstruction amendments. By undoing the work of the movement, you are undoing the results of the Civil War.

I really can’t get over the shamelessness of this. One party is emphatically pro-assassination, completely unfeeling on the subject of gun violence even when the victims are literal babies, and works hand in glove with right-wing paramilitaries. Violence helps that party by definition.

It can’t be repeated enough that *the security cordon worked* and the venue was, in fact, capable of safely accommodating everyone there. Security at the WH would work exactly the same way with someone attempting to sprint through the outside perimeter.

The number of ways Trump has screwed up Iran policy is truly mind-boggling: Pulling out of the JCPOA was disaster one, that triggered them resuming enrichment (disaster two), that led to new negotiation which he disrupted by bombing last year (disaster three), that led to resumed negotiations...
