Yeah the rotisserie chicken amendment is neat! Unfortunately it was attached to the Farm Bill which locked in $187 billion in cuts to SNAP. So, yes, now SNAP can be used for rotisserie chickens but more importantly, this bill means red tape, cuts & tons of people losing access to food completely.

I am considering a read through of Cherryh's complete works in publication order in honor of her retirement. Might be a good excuse to hunt down any remaining short fiction or essays that are available but which I am missing.

People generally need to be ok with letting hosing get built that they would not personally like to live in. Can't tell you the number of times someone has told me "I would never want to live in an apartment." Just...don't live in one then? That's no reason to make them illegal to build!

An enormous problem at WA State Parks is that years ago the state cut funding and started requiring Discover Passes to close the revenue gap. This incentivizes parks to rely on car-based parks visitors for a significant portion of its revenue.

Why is distracted driving common and widespread? Because people are spending too much time behind the wheel, don't have other good options, and don't know what else to do except multitask. What do those people need? Trains.

That post going around about "deeply antisocial" behavior implies that you avoid this behavior by focusing on specific people, and yet the behavior he's talking about is common and widespread. Those aren't deeply antisocial people, they are just people who aren't coping well with the environment.

You design systems and routines to make safe behavior easy and unsafe behavior hard, and you build systems to protect against inevitable unsafe behavior. None of designing for social wellbeing has to involve making some people you don't like stop existing.

I think a lot of people think that punishing people who behave outside of norms will somehow make those people behave within norms and that's not really how anything works. And you can't make those people just not exist either. Neither of those are real things.
