I've wondered if we're living through a different sort of epistemic closure: not one of the right cocooning itself in participatory nonsense, but rather one of billionaires grown confident that closing on—i.e., purchasing—the means of knowledge production will let them dictate what's real or true.

When "we cannot have serious conversations about AI" is just a shorthand for "I want critics to overlook that none of the criticism has been answered and I need them to accept that AI is without alternative and forever" the problem lies not with the critics.

Feel like one of the reasons Bluesky is fine but doesn’t really hit is that there aren’t many fun freaks on here. This place has too much reaction to news and not enough guys concocting japes and schemes that go awry

I haven’t been sleeping well and whenever I am woken up I am faced with some intrusive thoughts, one which reminded me of my ex who would be annoyed if i posted a picture of myself on stories if i had sent it to him first, insinuating i was trying to cheat on him

i think the huge intersecting issues at play with the hegemonic acceptance (can’t believe i am saying that) of child porn on x is that 1) it is fake and therefore its not serious and 2) children are not ‘real’ people and therefore are an oppressed class.

OpenAI is now facing a total of 8 wrongful death lawsuits from grieving families....who claim that ChatGPT, in particular, the GPT-4o version, drove their loved ones to suicide. Soelberg’s complaint also alleges that company executives knew the chatbot was defective before it pushed it to the public

This one really is useful because you won’t see a more clear demonstration of one of the most damaging political phenomena of the era: the reactionary professional mind rejecting unacceptable reality, only able to process and comprehend it via something close to conspiracy theory.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.
