As a vintage dealer I can almost always tell a person's politics by their style. Mod Farmhouse- fascist, modernist - usually left, cottage - can go either way, MCM - used to be left, now goes either way. General rule, if it's quaint it's fashy.

While 1986 (I was 15 that year) carried the ever-present threat of Cold War nuclear annihilation, the federal government was at least run by a more sane man than now. I wasn't a Reagan fan, but many of today's Republicans would consider his policies to be too "liberal."
