My favorite story about jazz sax master Sonny Rollins, is that in 1959 he took a sabbatical from the music business, honing his chops by practicing up to 16 hours a day playing alone on the Williamsburg Bridge. RIP to a giant who was also always searching as a musician and artist:

Tom Emmer is the type of sycophant that can be found historically in all the wannabe totalitarian regimes that spawned across Europe in the 1930s. "The Leader can do no wrong" is tattooed on his forehead.

When Liverpool played Arsenal in August, the local Arsenal supporters group reached out to us and told us of their intention of showing an act of communal support and remembrance for Diogo. This act was kind and appreciated and has made it impossible for me to be fueled by schadenfreude.

Love all this. Enjoying the pictures and videos too. Hopefully less about suffering and "the hope that kills you" from now on in general terms not just from Arsenal supporters. Football is never suffering. Communal, civic and diaspora hope is incredible.

This is absolutely outrageous. SCOTUS reinstated Texas gerrymander 15 weeks before primary because they claimed it was too close to election to block it but now allowing Alabama to gerrymander one week before primary after trial court found map was intentionally discriminatory against Black voters

The Roberts Court, the Trump White House, and the national GOP are acting like this is their one big shot. Either they secure the lasting end of US Constitutional democracy, or they’re in very serious trouble from the backlash. And they’ve already gone so far that there’s no other possibility.

So yesterday, the president's allies unveiled a 22-foot-tall golden statue of him that they prayed around, and then the president confused Iran and Iraq, seemed clueless about his FDA commissioner getting fired, and called a reporter a bitch? Cool. Cool cool cool.

A state that redraws its legislative maps before every election to maximize advantage for the incumbent party is not a democracy or a republic and in any case obviously violates the guarantee clause, among many others. No country does this. No country ever thought of doing this. It is a total farce.

it is racial discrimination to try ensure that the representation of a minority group is roughly in line with its proportion of the state’s population. it is equal protection to allow a state to obliterate a minority group’s representation.

If you want journalists to be nice to you, don’t have power. It’s a very easy fix. And if you are mad when journalists hold power to account, you are part of the problem.

The proper approach journalists should take to any element of power is skepticism that at times tips over into distrust. That’s the job.

What is "remarkable,"
@nytnickc.bsky.social
, is that it didn't even occur to you to ask, hey, why are there these mid-decade redistrictings happening in the first place? What did Trump say the goal of them were? Kinda weird isn't it? Kinda weirder than a "Dems are hypocrites!!?!" angle?
