I have learnt a lot about pay setting in Scandinavian countries this week, and it has only highlighted how much more there is to learn. The great news is that there is a vibrant and generative research program studying pay setting here!

How important is a good manager? A study published in The Quarterly Journal of Economics shows that a managerâs leadership ability can be as important as the combined productivity of a teamâs employees. The article, âHow Do You Identify a Good Manager?â, is co-authored by Joseph Vecci.

A good manager can be just as important to a companyâs performance as the combined productive capacity of its employees. This is shown in a new international study, published in The Quarterly Journal ...

Will do a Substack, but Sweden is a great example how inequality is complex. Once a textbook solidaristic economy, Sweden today is much more unequal. But it's largely a story of capital & upper tail income & taxes. Wage inequality rose much less, thanks to strong sectoral bargaining instituitions.

This chart is excellent. Itâs really clear how Labour didnât just lose votes on the margins, its coalition fully fractured into several pieces. Betraying your partyâs core values to try to win over voters who loathe you is bad politics in a majoritarian system with several parties

A striking fact I learnt researching my book: For those in the bottom half, much of the real wage growth between 1979 and 2019 happened over just 7 "tight" years. For top wages, full employment wasn't a big deal. For bottom wages, it was the nearly the whole game.
