I usually say something like "when will you be able to let me have that?" Then if there's some vagueness, "it would really help me plan my day/work if you could me know when you can do it." Or if there's a deadline, "I need to update progress by xx ."

People do remote work, including zoom calls, at our local hacker space ( @bithavenllc.bsky.social ) - maybe there's a similar hobby or club space in your area.

I wonder: maybe hotels? Not booking a room necessarily, but hotel lobbies or their "office space" workroom if it's in the publicly accessible area.

If you're not prioritizing your work that your company pays you for over the needs of others who use the space everyone paid for with their taxes because your company feels it can outsource costs, yes. This needs to be handled with a "who pays and who loses out"-mindset. And I say this respectfully

Generally, I agree with this! But I will also add that libraries can be a good choice. Many libraries have separate rooms that can work as conference rooms.

I used to work in cafes a lot (haven't found the right ones here yet) but I made sure to buy something to eat/drink fairly regularly... Some places now charge a flat fee for working in them, which seems entirely reasonable to me.

When I worked remotely I had to always work from home (I was on calls most of the day) because of the sensitive proprietary nature of the work I did. So I always find it fascinating that people can take work calls in public!

Maybe I misunderstand the issue, but I will try and answer. If you go into a cafe to have a work zoom for 10 minutes, everything is fine and dandy. If you sit there for hours & hours sipping on a latte and your own water bottle, people are gonna get upset. If it's work, someone should pay for space.

Cafés are absolutely the place to do this. That's completely reasonable unless somebody is talking very loudly or about things that should be confidential.

Call boxes redux

Libraries you still need to be in a separate working space or dedicated work area to take the call. I've hijacked a room a couple of times while working in a library, and also worked in a corner where others have chosen to make calls discussing frankly sensitive things. It's hard.

Depends if I've got something else actually useful to be getting on with in the meantime. If yes... no problem. If no... then with difficulty!

General question for those who dislike "waiting for others" (for permissions, for finishing some work, for doing something they promised to do) (talking abt things you cannot do - things have to be signed by a specific person etc. ) How do you do the waiting without getting severely irritated??

It's tricky. Why do people have an expectation that there will be free or negligible cost commercial or public spaces to carry out their business activities? There's various commercially viable ultra short term office spaces available but they're charging appropriately based on their costs.

The primary place I am aware of people taking calls that is not their home or in-office space is their car. Not a great option, I agree there's a need for these spaces.

Am seeing a lot of disgruntlement about people having work zoom calls in cafes etc. I get that. Where are the spaces though where if you are remote you can have a work zoom call? (Without paying for space). Libraries? Where else pls? Am curious. I believe we need these spaces.
