For anyone who doesn't vote - please remember that people actually died in order to give you the right. On this day in 1913, Emily Davison was hit by King George's horse, dying from her injuries four days later. The queen called her a 'horrid woman', the Daily Express 'malignant'.

Today in 1784, Élisabeth Thible became the first woman to fly in an untethered hot air balloon. She must have confounded some sections of the populace by not only not fainting or screaming in terror, but singing extracts from a popular opera. They had style in those days.

Had a brief trip abroad last week, with no car, so had to carry everything in a rucksack. I packed carefully. The only item I took but didn't use was a towel. Ford Prefect doesn't know what he's talking about.

Marvellous film of a hovering kestrel, showing that its head stays perfectly still while it hunts. The body and wings move constantly, making the small adjustments needed. Incredible skill.
