Whenever I see someone mentioning how sad it is to see people 'working full time', but still living in poverty, I just want to shake them and ask them why don't they see the blindingly obvious connection between those two things.

My least radical opinion is that living well, beyond mere survival, is a fundamental human right that should not be tied to one's capacity to 'work full time'. Poverty is an unnecessary evil in a world where we already produce more than enough for everyone. Its only use is to discipline labour.
