This is literally the purpose of an MP. They’re there as a representative of their constituency first and foremost. They are elected by the people in the catchment of around 66,000 people. The party is supposed to come after the people, not before the people.

In the end, we no longer operate in a marketplace of ideas. Platforms run a marketplace of feeling, where attention, not evidence, decides what rises. Emotional charge beats truth every time. Politics adapts to that logic, producing hollow performances instead of functional decisions.

When public priorities are shaped by engagement algorithms, politics turns reactive. Parties perform ‘control’ instead of solving problems. That’s how hollow discourse grows, and why extreme narratives gain leverage they could never earn on evidence.

The real issue isn’t immigration, it’s the feedback loop: platforms amplify anxiety → voters feel it → politicians chase it → hollow policy follows. Until we break that cycle, we won’t get functional decisions or functional democracy.

Governments and voters are both reacting to algorithm-shaped “public opinion,” not grounded priorities. Immigration feels urgent because platforms amplify fear, pulling parties into hollow performances of toughness. The far right reads that drift as confirmation it’s winning.

Unhinged conspiracy theory ended up with people harassing innocent people who worked at a pizza place. Also another unrelated pizza place had an arson attack because of unhinged claims of things happening in a non-existent basement.

Yeah there were multiple places like that but those two...whew. Places no normal person should ever hang out at but many mainstream journalists/anchors should have been forced to lurk for at least a month before claiming they understood anything about what was going on.

About 15ish years ago, the folks on the /b/ 4chan board would call CSAM “cheese pizza” (same initials as what they were exchanging). 4chan is also where Qanon and PizzaGate were dreamt up (tho maybe on /pol/, I don’t know because you’d have needed a hazmat suit to actually lurk there ever).

Reminder that Pizzagate originated from 4chan getting a hold of the John Podesta emails and believing that he and people he corresponded with were using code THAT 4CHAN USERS THEMSELVES HAD CREATED TO DISCUSS THEIR OWN CSAM CONSUMPTION.

Behind the weasel words and prevaricating euphemisms, Britain's politics of immigration are rooted in an antipathy to the presence of negatively racialised people in this country *on any terms*. If we'd confronted that reality decades ago, and faced it down, we wouldn't be where we are now.

The only Legitimate Concerns about asylum seekers are concerns for their well being and safety. For a rich country like ours to incessantly whine about these people as if we are their victims is perhaps the single most pathetic spectacle in British politics over the past quarter century.

In 2013 I was a mental health case worker for a 24yr old woman - a refugee - with no recourse to public funds - staying in a hostel with a 14m old baby. She was relying on charity from the Salvation Army to feed her child and she was emaciated because she was so malnourished herself.

This is the sort of headline that should get far more attention than it does. It should be the subject of intense politicking by many showing the cumulative impacts of 14 years of Tory austerity and Brexit. Unfortunately, our politicians would rather blame foreigners.
