I’ve heard about attempts to get three-phase power to a railway vehicle. It never got very far and this lovely model of a 1901 railcar shows why three contact wires and three pantographs was going to always look ungainly. Brilliant madness.

Who doesn’t love a transmission tower with this much hanging off it. Looks like a quadruple 380 kV circuits on the upper arms with a lower voltage double circuit on the lowest arms. Each circuit is three-phase. Seen from the train window on the approach to Köln.

This morning I’m off to Berlin for a meeting of the Global Power System Transformation Consortium hosted by 50 Hertz. First leg of the journey was stressed by no trains leaving Brighton before about 06:15 because of overrunning overnight works. However, no safely installed on Eurostar.

I had a busy day yesterday. I’d arranged an away-day for the department (Electrical and Electronic Eng) and we had some productive and wide-ranging discussions. We’d booked out the Museum of Steam and Water near Kew Bridge and they were kind enough to stream the big engines during our lunch break.
