For a long time, the New York Democratic machine was corrupt, sclerotic, hostile to progress, and completely implacable. That started to change when 13 women came forward, at great personal cost, about the sexual harassment they experienced from Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani is in the big leagues now. Lander won, but we expected that. The story is that Valdez, also backed by Mamdani, beat Reynoso. The Brooklyn party told Mamdani in public to back off. A mayor from outside Brooklyn who can tell the Brooklyn party to get in line is powerful indeed.

And one more thing: all the cranks demanding third parties should take a look at what Mamdani has done. He won his Democratic primary and then threw his support behind other primary challengers and won those. He's the King of New York, and he did it as a Democrat and with Democrats.

I would simply suggest that if people want to defend democracy and see defeating incumbent democrats as the way to do that, then the failure lies not with the challengers and voters but with the incumbents who failed, often repeatedly, to meet the moment while squandering energy and donations.
