Last night’s film was The Devils (1971) which ended up being a striking pairing with the previous night’s Deep Red. Russell uses theatrical, visual metaphor to nail the themes, and stark realism as a hammer to drive them home. A incredible indictment of religion, power seekers & the mindless mob.

This week was my first watch of Deep Red (1975). Agento creates an environment of endless, ratcheting tension even over scenes that would not be out of place in a romcom or slapstick comedy. The killer is always present even when they are not. Fantastic use of POV, color, & swift, shocking violence

In 2011, John M Burns proposed illustrating Modesty Blaise in colour. He used existing strips from the story "Top Traitor" drawn by Jim Holdaway (whose work he admired - he had a Holdaway original framed in his studio) in lieu of a script. Here are his examples alongside the Holdaway strips.
