Happy Birthday to Al Williamson. My tattered copy of his FLASH GORDON #5 that I stumbled across on the comics racks in 1967 probably holds little commercial value, but remains a priceless talisman and a timeless inspiration to that little kid that still lives inside me. Thanks, Al!

Sam Kieth has passed. There are so many great comics creators I love, but Sam is on my Mount Rushmore. The Maxx was a revelation when I first read it. What a sad loss. What a great creator. I will miss your light in this world intensely.

Last night’s film was The Devils (1971) which ended up being a striking pairing with the previous night’s Deep Red. Russell uses theatrical, visual metaphor to nail the themes, and stark realism as a hammer to drive them home. A incredible indictment of religion, power seekers & the mindless mob.

This week was my first watch of Deep Red (1975). Agento creates an environment of endless, ratcheting tension even over scenes that would not be out of place in a romcom or slapstick comedy. The killer is always present even when they are not. Fantastic use of POV, color, & swift, shocking violence
