One of the most preposterous and weirdly compelling movies I've ever seen. The poster doesn't say it all, but it says a lot.

The father of Fred Marx, of Hoop Dreams film, was a schoolteacher called before HUAC on the same day as Sondergaard. Because of all the press coverage, his presence was way more publicized than it would have been otherwise, causing crisis w/his job & family. He died of a heart attack at 40.

I wish Mr. Lee's film was better (it's terrible—but fun)... still, he's the spitting image of that legendary loon (or calculating manipulator... or both).

BTD - Gale Sondergaard - Channeled her striking looks into a string of memorably sinister roles like The Cat and the Canary and surprisingly comedic turns like Never Say Die. She was blacklisted for refusing to cooperate with the HUAC - Here is the letter stating her intentions not to testify.
