the other day I had the depressing thought: what if this is it? what if this is the big novum of our time? what if nothing cooler comes out and we're stuck with a plagiarizing chatbot that makes people suicidal?

This is laughable from the ground here. I mean, scary, yes, absolutely, but the idea that anyone in the metro is gonna get fired is such a deliberarly wild mis-read of the mood here. Just smacks of desperation and a "pulled our pants up but realized we forgot to wipe" rush to do too little too late

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.

This is exactly what it must have felt like to live under an Ancien Regime monarchy. The courtiers competing for proximity to the royal personage, controlling his access to information, everyone in the kingdom psychologizing the ruler to work out why things are happening

The official line on this is that a "domestic terrorist" tried to run down an agent, and all his colleagues, standing just a few feet away, stand there calmly twiddling their thumbs—as law enforcement officers are notoriously prone to do when one of their own is assaulted.

Delighted to have received a grant from a submerging writers foundation, which supports mid-career authors while they age, procrastinate and feel their early promise ebb away. Grants like this are essential to the production of unmarketable work of limited appeal.

I was asked what image really stands out for me from the scene of today's killing of an observer by federal agents. It's this one, where border patrol Commander Greg Bovino appears to be staging a photo op less than an hour after and just a few dozen feet from where a federal agent killed a woman.

If the DEA had killed 80 innocent Americans in the course of apprehending one drug dealer, there would be riots. But we are so ghoulishly indifferent to the lives and humanity of people abroad that it's barely even part of the conversation.
