In the 16 weeks since the Ford government made our city turn off speed cameras, compliance went from 87% to roughly 40%. Just last week, someone drove so fast in a school zone, that they flipped their car. This policy is actively putting kids in danger.

You could have reduced the cost of public transport for a full year in Canada's top 7 cities by 1/3 rather than this. Which one would have benefited the people who really need the help the most? Let's be more thoughtful about how we do these initiatives.

If you want to help people, help them directly, and let them choose if expensive gasoline is a good use of that money. This just hands tax dollars to oil companies and puts our emissions reduction goals further out of reach.

I feel it too, every time I get behind the wheel. When I make a right turn by looking left for oncoming cars and sliding forwards across the crosswalk without thinking that someone could also be walking there. When I automatically drive as fast as the car ahead of me. It is powerful and insidious.

The point is that we have an oil dependence problem, and it’s going to take a lot of money to get out of it. But we also have an opportunity here to pay for that transition using the excess revenues generated by the private extraction of public resources. After all, that oil belongs to Canadians.

But Ottawa had bike share before... 🧐

Three months after Ottawa removed its automatic safety cameras, the share of drivers following the speed limit plunged from 87% to 41%(!). "High-end speeding" is up 10x. Automatic enforcement saves lives. If you remove it, people will die.

This here needs to stop. Why subsidize SFH? Just make them pay the proper price and remove the pressure on apartment dwellers. This is wealth transfer in the wrong direction. This exacerbates inequalities and amplifies social crisis.

Gas tax breaks are bandaids at best. Real solution is to help low & middle-income Cdns get off fossil fuels. Invest in solar, heat pumps, batteries, EVs. Tackle barriers, offer real incentives & fund w/ windfall tax on Big Oil (who are laughing all the way to the bank). Cleaner, cheaper, healthier.

Carney has announced he’s temporarily dropping the relatively small gas tax. He didn’t need to do that, with Poilievre in a free fall. And all it does is fuel the idea that gas taxes drive gas prices, which they obviously don’t. This was a mistake, similar to letting the carbon tax be reframed.

Lift kit, oversized wheels, blacked out windows, licence plate covered. But sure…. Bike lane are the problem. Police need to step up enforcement including at the source: mechanic shops who performed these sort of modifications, should be fined and put out of business.

We are really pleased to learn that city council has stood by its excellent city-wide policies on walkability, inclusion and protecting vulnerable road users by re-committing at council yesterday that sidewalks need to be included on all local roads whenever they are rebuilt. 1/

Today at Council we were going to be voting on the original staff recommendation for an integrated road/sewer project in Rideau-Rockcliffe that included the unbelievably controversial debate over the inclusion of sidewalks. This debate has baffled me. 1/

NIMBYs always throw all the reasons to kill a project to see what sticks. I have seen people suddenly care about geotechnical engineering, agricultural experiments, wind flow, and of course, the always ignored until convenient, accessibility.

It is so tiring to have to deal with this over and over again. Please contact your local councillor and tell them enough is enough.

Tomorrow City Council will discuss and vote on the final approval for the Bank Street bus lane pilot. We still think it is a huge mistake that the city took out their planned event day bus lanes. Every side seems to support this, here's Darrell Cox (BIA Executive Director) saying it's a great idea

I just read a letter in the Citizen where the writer called sidewalks "ugly" and said that Manor Park is low traffic ergo no sidewalks needed. 🙄 People can be so near sighted.

THIS. THIS. All day this! I did the math: all the time I've spent ferrying my children to & from school because it wasn't safe for them to walk or bike independently amounts to EIGHT MONTHS. 5,400 hours. It was 99% biking. I don't regret the exercise or the time with my kids, but it's a lot. 1/4
