There are two speed cameras on Walkley Rd between Bank and St Laurent that were installed in 2024. In 2022 that stretch of Walkley had 34 collisions with injuries. In 2024, after the cameras were turned on, there were just 4 collisions with injuries. Speed cameras work.

I've filtered Ottawa's traffic collision data to show only collisions with injuries for each year, and then added the speed camera locations present in those years. It looks like speed cameras have made the roads much safer.

The bike-lane issue has gotten all the attention, hence my post. But the same bill includes giving the minister power to impose province wide street standards (which has every city working on “complete streets” standards very worried) and require a standardized (not good) approach to official plans.

For taxpayers, every piece of cycling infrastructure is a gift that keeps on giving. An asset that returns annual savings in congestion, pollution, maintenance, safety and healthcare over its lifetime. Stop asking whether your city can afford to invest in cycling. Ask whether it can afford not to.

It’s really important that
#Vancouver’s
Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced. Safe bike-lanes mean business.
