Youth Independent Mobility should really be a key metric in a city's success. We all win.

Ottawa has so many schools directly on arteries rather than 1 block off arteries like the city I was a teen in. Jeanne d'Arc was planned as a traffic mover but has 2 elementary schools and a high school within about 5 blocks. Kids lose with these conflicted designs.

To make it safer for kids to play outdoors and independently parents need to demand that cities build infrastructure and public spaces that keeps them safe from drivers (touched on in this podcast). That's what #KidicalMass is all about. Kids have a right to the city and a need to play.

In the press coverage that I have reviewed (French and English), I have found no trace of parent blame. Children’s right to the safe use of their own local streets was a well recognized value that we have since lost. The mobility gains of some have been the mobility losses of others.
