We fundamentally believe that children have a right to space to be in public, to get where they need to go, where they do not have to share space with motor vehicles - an increasing number of which are oversized and where the driver cannot even see them. This is beyond disappointing.

The number of children injured or killed by cars while walking or riding a bike has fallen steadily since the 1970s, but CDC researcher note that this decline is not because streets are safer, but because fewer kids are out and about in the first place.

Dutch roads were car-choked and hostile. Then Stop de Kindermoord happened. Women, many mothers, led the charge, their fury fuelled by a grim toll of child road deaths. They galvanisef the strength of feeling into action, forcing the Dutch government to give road safety the attention it deserved.
