Anyway every housing policy fight is a proxy battle over who gets to live in your neighborhood and what lifestyles are acceptable.

And it all seems to come back to this letter from Sean Fraser, stating for Calgary to recieve the HAF funding it must "end exclusionary zoning city-wide by legalising much needed missing middle housing."

The new statement from CMHC is much more direct on all of this:

Google maps listed the drive home today as 17 min but bicycling was only 14. Three min faster! I biked it, of course, and it took around 20 min thanks to no snow maintenance. 🤷‍♂️

Big credit to Mayor Cam Guthrie (@camguthrie.bsky.social) of Guelph, Ontario for using strong mayor powers to reinstate funding for winter clearing of the city’s bike network! Snow clearing is the essential factor, without which people can’t even consider biking in the winter.

In Calgary, sometimes the LRT comes through and you miss a turn… and that’s okay because +600 people just got through and didn’t add 600 cars on the road. 👍

On one of the iciest days this winter season, by 4:30 PM there were 225 people who bicycled past this counter on the 5 St SW cycle track. The cycle track was good, but pathways leading to it were treacherous. Imagine if Calgary was had a higher standard for snow and ice management!

Coun. Atkinson says he campaigned against somebody who wanted to repeal and Atkinson won. He says he ran on fixing it because he's be living it. He says repeal doesn't solve for any of the community concerns that are actually experiencing the density.

For me, covering this debate, this breakdown is incredibly significant.
