We compared Pedal Poll counts with the Spatial Access Measures database, which estimates accessibility to destinations across Canada. Even without controlling for anything else, there is a strong association between the rate of people biking and accessibility to destinations by bike.

Co-author Moreno Zanotto used Google Street View to classify hundreds of unique count sites according to Can-BICS, which revealed that in each year and across all the data together, high comfort bike infrastructure is associated with much higher rates of people biking.

Over four years of Pedal Poll, volunteers counted over 200,000 people on bikes in more than 1,800 count sessions, counting in every province and territory except Nunavut. In 2021 we were all desperate for something safe and useful to do, so it's great to see sustained volunteer engagement into 2024.

#PedalPollSondoVelo 2025 is possible through funding & support from Housing, Infrastructure, & Communities Canada, Mobilizing Justice (@uoft.bsky.social), CounterPoint, Healthy Populations Institute (@dalhousieu.bsky.social) & CHATR (Cities, Health & Active Transportation Research) Lab (@sfu.ca).

Results: 21 cyclists and 80 pedestrians within two hours (midday) on a hot day. There was a lot more nearby traffic that wasn’t part of the count. I’m also sad that the very good dogs didn’t count. Maybe next year?
