My own experience last two years, and that of my coworkers, has been nothing short of deeply traumatic. And again - I'm someone who survived 2008. This is the worst job market I've ever seen, and that anxiety and uncertainty has bled into workplaces; morale across the board is lowest I've ever seen

The 2008 Depression taught me that as soon as people start asking "Are we in a recession?" the answer is that we've actually been in a recession for some time, it's just that no one wants to acknowledge it. The mass layoffs the last 2 years have already resulted in more job losses than 2008.

I once blocked a dude for going on about how he was gonna, "write the best book & get it adapted to TV," as if I wasn't trying hard enough or that I wasn't noticed bc of quality. When I asked him if he'd ever written anything before, the answer was no. Can "take on Serena Williams"-ass dork.

I guess it is similar to how they took the reputable anti-virus software and turned it into spammy âwe found 13758584636 threats on your computer, upgrade your already paid subscription to extra super premium to resolve themâ type software that itself looks like virus popups when it spams me???

In 2009 I spilled half a tray of the sauce from basil chicken onto my 7 year old laptop keyboard. It shorted out the keyboard but didn't kill my laptop because the keyboard was a discrete module. I ended up paying like 100 bucks to have the keyboard replaced.

In fact when your phone glitched and you couldn't get it to stop the trick was "remove the battery" Laptop batteries used to be removable too so you could have a backup battery!

Like there was a period when tech was really hard and cumbersome and you had to be a super nerd to use it and then there was a period where tech just worked. Like the earlier hardship period was growing pains but then they figured out how to make it WORK I'd say circa 2005-2015.

"I got into a twenty minute argument with ChatGPT about something it was factually incorrect about--" Okay. But why. What is the point of that. What were you hoping to accomplish with that? Even if it eventually says words that agree with you, it will not store that correction anywhere.

Since I was hired we have lost 8 TT English faculty, not one of whom has been replaced by a TT faculty member. So yes a v ignorant person could walk thru my dept & say, âhmm a bunch of old farts hanging onto their jobs!â rather than, âthe state & admin are killing the English dept thru attrition.â

There are many ways to read Moynâs stats: that old ppl are hang onto jobs is simply v bad empiricism. Why are faculty in HUM at my campus old? Bc we stopped hiring new faculty about 15 years ago, before which preceded a long era of very slow hiring. I was the last TT prof hired by my dept, in 2010

The problem is not that older faculty are sticking around - itâs that they are not being replaced. The argument of this piece is quite pernicious as it substitutes a class war btw workers and a neoliberal administration w an age war btw different ranks of workers

A number of space science organizations offered support for Isaacman's nomination because he is a proponent of space exploration and claimed he would support science. But now that science is on the chopping block -- and human spaceflight isn't -- he is volunteering to give NASA the DOGE treatment.

Fireflies are the charismatic megafauna of insects. Nobody doesn't like fireflies. They're harmless and pretty and evoke intense whimsy and nostalgia. Bees are great, but people are allergic and they can be dangerous and inconvenient to have in certain places. Fireflies are just Little Guys.

Truly remarkable how many people have told the Pope, in some way or another, to "shut up and dribble." Or corrected him on the Bible, despite their thin education on theology. Or told him to stay out of US affairs, despite him being a US citizen. The hubris is amazing.

it takes a high degree of emotional literacy to go "wow, I had a very intense reaction to something I'm now learning isn't based in fact, I need to interrogate that so I can flag it if it comes up again", and in our 24/7 disinformation economy many people simply choose never to accept correction

it's hard to get retractions to stick because you can't un-have an emotion. a lot of people developed angry feelings for Chappell Roan over this, and now that they know she didn't actually do it they're even MORE angry at her because they resent being told they repeated wrong information
