The mutilation of national monuments under this administration is really not that different from the mutilation of the rest of this country's institutions. Whoever is next has to get rid of this shit, and they probably can't be the same, but this version Cannot Continue.

As much as I'm exhausted of AI, the world is full of things that aren't AI and it's great for the soul and it breaks my heart a little promoting that doesn't get as much attention as only being against stuff. So imma make a thread of things I like:

Both totally unnecessary and extremely funny that the Guardian has an interactive graphic for you to change the color of the US flag's blue to the color of the Reflecting Pool from 8 to 19 June and counting

In an ideal world, I'd have the bandwidth to care about historical monuments getting damaged by unqualified contractors on a no-bid contract, but at the moment I just don't care at all (given everything else going on) but it is funny to mock, and we need joy to keep going

Had to pick something up at the mall today and Macy’s has huge World Cup displays for the US and Mexico. Hey we have another cohost? That we are notably closer to? Hey, Canada, I notice you.

They want to unmask their enemies because getting ratioed on twitter by anons drove them insane and led to an inflated sense of victimhood that’s only gotten more distorted since. It’s a violently narcissistic power grab where journalists & MPs can have much easier access to everyone else’s manager.

This has the potential to derail him because people the more AI is forced on people, the more they hate it. It's not "illiteracy". It's the fact it's being forced on us with no discernible benefit to us.

The sheer fact that they included "spellcheckers", a technology that has been around for decades, as "minimal AI" is telling, as if they so desperately want to be able to say that everyone is using it that they have to add basic spellcheck to the list.

So the aggregate results from this survey will, by default, not show how many authors don't use it at all, because apparently not using it at all means you are "AI-Minimal." There are 5 answer options, but apparently they couldn't devote a single one to a simple "I don't use AI in any capacity."

Alli's new author survey on AI use dropped today, and their email said they wanted to see how people are using it, from those who do, to those who avoid it entirely. Funny then how the only option in the survey for those who don't use it is labeled "AI Minimal".

That isn't proof that AI is the future and we have to get on board or be left behind. It's just proof that if you flood a market with cheap crap, the people who don't want cheap crap will quit buying anything that isn't from a previously vetted source.

I do in fact believe we COULD create an online world that’s safer for kids without destroying everyone’s online privacy from big tech and repressive governments - but this would also require more and more nuanced work than the authoritarian sledgehammer solution of age verification.

I really do think a lot about how big tech systematically destroyed all the reasonably-safe places intended specifically for kids online…. and now powerful interests are turning around and claiming that we have to destroy Internet privacy because being online is obviously dangerous for kids.

t's not that I think lying or pretending the things the right does and has always done is better than the current situation. But I do think the fact that they *had* to lie and pretend it was something else maybe said something important about US, the people, that was important, and we've lost it.
