My unsatisfying take is that it was somehow both. There really was a dramatic nationwide shift in the direction of the Republican party which is run by the MAGA, it's also not clear that the voters actually realized it, and then the whole DOGE was insane.

MAGA is a vehicle for a people with a worldview that everything bad in life is because of an enemy that must be exterminated and the horrible things they must do are part of that extermination. The result did accelerate more people to act on that worldview.

I think this is tied to whether you think politics is team sports. If you do when your team wins it's always a blowout and a sign of dominance and when your team loses it's a flaw in reality and was caused by someone's malfeasance or cheating.

Long before MAGA the right had adopted a team sports mentality about politics. And it poisoned them.

I don't think it's as binary as this, but we have to be honest about the fact that there has been no visible yearning for the political environment of 2020-2024 on most social issues. On many things, the pendulum swing has not come.
