It is obvious now that the Parliamentary Commissioner was about to throw the book at Farage so he’s decided to circumvent that formal punishment by resigning. However Farage could be stopped in his tracks - read this:

Farage is running scared. What else is he hiding? People shouldn't be blindsided by this obvious distraction. The investigation should continue. The Serious Fraud Office should be all over his financial affairs like a nasty rash.

The Government must block Nigel Farage’s resignation until the Standards Commissioner finishes investigating him. The people of Clacton deserve the full facts. If a by-election does go ahead, all parties should stand aside. We cannot give oxygen to this vanity project.

All other parties should refuse to stand against Farage in the Clacton-on-Sea by-election on the basis of not legitimising a cynical self-serving gimmick. It would be totally humiliating for Farage and preserve the need for a contested by-election post-investigation when voters know the full facts.

It's worth stressing that we have rules around political funding to protect our entire democracy. The voters of one constituency might be fine with their MP breaking those rules. But they can't release their MP from them, because a single MP on the take is a danger to the whole system.
