This is a very thoughtful way of working as a group to determine boundaries on AI use within a lab and I completely agree with their conclusions based on my own experience testing LLM tools!

Here's a movie from the 3D neuroimaging paper - this is the telencephalon of a 19 month old tg(kdrl:mCherry, mpeg1:eGFP) fish. We use imaris to strip the top layer (the skin and skull) off the projection so we can see just the tissue beneath the skull. This was taken with a Bruker 2P+ multiphoton.

It looks like as a signatory to the UN Florence Agreement, if you 1) buy an item as a nonprofit or educational institution, 2) from a signatory country, 3) can demonstrate it is for research purposes, and/or 4) the item is not made in the US in significant quantities, you can import duty-free!

The NIH’s 2024 budget of just under $37B generated $95B in economic activity in 2024 alone. 99.4% of new pharmaceuticals approved from 2010-2019 came from NIH-funded research. Ok y'all false alarm, I went into work and turduckened my work computer to log in to my home computer and was able to get imaris to display properly. Weird glitch - absolutely no idea what happened.

Just in case anyone else has had this niche experience: Can't see Imaris display on a computer with a floating license I'm remoting into from home. It's just a white screen. Feels like a security update? (I've been able to do this in the past).

For the cost of the commerical system that I bought in 2013 and I have no use for 99% of its features, you can make like 10 custom, purpose-built microscopes. LEDs are cheap, cameras are cheap, software is free.

Your yearly reminder to acknowledge the core facilities you use and their staff scientists in your papers. These scientists are a crucial part of the scientific ecosystem and to continue to exist they need tangible credit for their work. Plus their associated expertise adds credibility to your work.
