A further reminder that top line FY 2026 budget numbers "wins" came with a significant caveat. Caveat: An administration that doesn't want to follow through will find ways to impede, slow, and stop the progress of science & medical research. Continued oversight and public pushback is required.

1. Kevin Gross and I have a new paper out today PLOS Biology. We used economic models based around screening games and the market for unpaid labor to highlight a meltdown cycle threatening peer review.

South Carolina has requested urgent assistance with handling the measles outbreak there. They did not request it from RFK Jr.’s moribund CDC, but rather the CDC Foundation, which is a nonprofit that is independent of the U.S. government. RFK Jr. continues to do NOTHING about this outbreak.

A troubling new problem has emerged in Minnesota: Immigrants are being released without documents proving their status. According to 10 immigration lawyers we interviewed, immigrants have been released from detention centers without work permits, Social Security cards, and other documents.

Republicans in Arizona want voters to get rid of childhood vaccine requirements for school entry. They are planning to add a ballot proposition for November’s election in the hopes of ending the requirements, which they are framing as an issue of “medical freedom”. This would be catastrophic.
