I've worked with American troops off and on my whole career and I know most of them as decent, hardworking people who don't deserve leaders like this. The thing is that the military genuinely would have had no problem staying segregated, all-white, or all-male if not for that pesky little problem where they didn't have enough people when they did that and it turns out it costs less and works better when you just integrate units.
