As the conservatives freak out over VA, a reminder: BEFORE the 2022 midterms, federal courts found that multiple once-covered-by-the-VRA states likely illegally diluted Black votes. But because of Purcell, these illegal maps were used that fall. So miss me with the pearl clutching.

Partisan gerrymandering is a good example of how hardball and the maintenance of beneficial norms can be complimentary. You maintain the ultimate goal of good governance, which is to say, an end to partisan gerrymandering. But you also recognize that unilateral disarmament is counterproductive.

Trump's approval is similar to GWB's in 2006 but the generic ballot in June 2006 (when GWB was at about 38%) was +11 for dems. Now it's +5. Partisanship and -ve partisanship are much stronger now. Many R disapprovers will remember who their team is when there's a D on a ballot.

The top-two primary needs to be abolished. Every election cycle it leads to races where one party risks getting shut out of a general election it would likely win. It forces parties to pick favorites in primaries just to avoid shutouts. It fails to do what its proponents intended—often the opposite
