Apart from the unnecessary hardship this will inflict on individuals, this will be bad for integration and social cohesion, bad for the economy, and will increase irregular migration. [And, as
@robfordmancs.bsky.social
has shown, it's hugely unpopular and out of step with the British public]

This piece by Táíwò is mandatory reading. it's a rebuke of Ezra Klein's delusional bluster, sure. but it's also a master class in deftly braiding the complexities of this moment (and our recent histories) into a compelling narrative path forward. thinking matters, and this piece shows why

Politico: "The Sun has seen evidence to [a US] committee submitted by Nigel Farage in which he suggests the White House should use “diplomacy and trade” in the free speech battle, which sounds like calling for Britain to be bullied into a law change." Is Farage calling for sanctions AGAINST the UK?

Feels awfully like London is a thriving global capital rather than a "third world hell hole" or whatever Nigel Farage says, and Britain can still build transformational infrastructure projects. Maybe the government should make something of that?

Great summation of dynamics in

dodged a massive bullet. Today, Romanians chose Europe, chose freedom, and change for the better. In a moment filled with anger, fear, and fatigue, we didn’t let our darker nature define us. 🇷🇴 🇪🇺

💥Viktor Orbán made one of his biggest mistakes by praising anti-Hungarian far-right candidate George Simion. 🇭🇺 In Hungary, he hurt his “nationalist” credibility, angering many right-wing voters. 🇷🇴 In Romania, the Orbán-loyal Hungarian diaspora voted most heavily against Simion. 👎And Simion lost.

I've never felt more politically betrayed. It feels beyond the pale for now all 3(!!!) major parties in the UK to have this vitriolic narrative about immigration. I feel absolutely bereft. If Labour cave in on net zero as well to Blair I feel left with no choice but to campaign against them.

a society where "bad immigrants" are demonised is a society where no immigrant can truly feel welcome, because aren't we all just one wrong turn or accident away from being unemployed? on disability benefits? unable to care for our children without state help? just no such thing as a safe immigrant
