I’ve been reading articles that say fusion power is “about 20 years away” for close to half a century. Like, I genuinely want it to work, but I’ve fully given up on it happening in my lifetime. Cynical take: “20 years” entices funding w/no promise of results until the next generation of investors.

I lost a lot of IRL friends in the run-up to the election last year. They’d nod along sagely when I said 1950s nostalgia had been weaponized as a gateway to fascism; but when I pointed out that 1990s nostalgia works the same way, suddenly it was absurd to suggest nostalgia could ever be a bad thing.
