Challenge for Labour is how to appeal to left and right and not lose support in both directions. Meaningful progress on boats / asylum critical. But so too is cost of living, NHS & offering something on poverty / inequality. A key issue for 2024 Labour voters.

Reform take Runcorn by 6 votes. Big moment. Reform surge is real. No two ways about it. Labour will desperately want to increase the pace of change - to show those voting Labour last summer (on issues like public services, the cost of living and poverty / inequality) that they were right to do so.

When people report on this week’s local elections, this is the crucial context for understanding broad-based dissatisfaction. It’s not all about Farage or immigration or some kind of political awakening. The two largest parties have caused/presided over economic gloom.

We've been tracking at @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social how the public feel about the state of the UK's economy for nearly 50 years - and it's at its lowest ranking ever. For context, that's worst than post Winter of Discontent, the '08 crash and Covid.

This could be very popular! Our polling finds 81% of Britons consider it unacceptable to listen to music without headphones. 82% think its unacceptable to listen to music so loud others can hear it, & 73% think its unacceptable to do a conference/video call with no headphones.
