I found a phrase that is resonating with my Intro Geosci and lab students this semester: It’s not about “right answers” in our labs, it’s about “reasonable answers” based on evidence. They’re taking a lot more chances and seem to be even more engaged than usual.

If you asked me the hardest parts of science today, I’d say (2) method development (3) “library work” (2) can take years of building, testing, calibrating and standardizing. Likewise (3) can take months or years to engage with literature correctly, especially in a nee field.

I think any project that doesn’t start and end with major literature searches is definitively not research.

There's an ongoing quite revolution in the Earth Sciences represented by thermochronology and stable isotope geochemistry, for example. The latter one has also affected archeology, paleontology, and climate science. I don't think that's really been covered at all.
