Beautiful, well-made, challenging contemporary kids movies do exsist (sometimes you have to look for them) and we shouldnt be blinded by nostalgia (not all old kids movies were good) but I hope the trend of overstimulation/under story isnt a permanent change. Kids deserve traumatic movies.

The modern film industry seems deathly afraid of offering kids anything that might scare them, portray diverse POVs or show a less black and white view of morality. Its being proven over and over that kids love a little fear in their films, development empathy young and like to be challenged.

I do NOT think all kids media made today is bad. But there are some trends unseen in older film that dont seem to take the emotional curiosity of kids seriously. Everything is cut like a tiktok/YouTube video and we are losing these quiet stretches of stillness filmakers like Miyazaki call "Ma."

Rewatching the Lion King it struck me that Mufasa's death is not only shown mostly onscreen but there is long, calm moment of quiet grief after his fall where kids are allowed to sit with Simba and accept the heaviness of the situation. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
