I wish some major media outlets would do broad reports on the impact of death threats on our politics, and on who's doing them (MAGA men mostly from what I can tell), and why law enforcement appears to be doing so little about them. They are such a big (submerged) part of our politics now.

The Founders were so concerned about bribery that the Constitution forbids it three separate times (the two emoluments clauses and as the only name impeachable offense besides treason). Exactly for this reason. A US president pocketing funds from foreign govts leads to actions against US interests.

I found that this is wrong. Democracy actually is a powerful motivating force for a critical slice of the population *if they perceive a real threat*. I call this the "legibility" theory of democratic backsliding: the more legible the threat, the more likely it is to prompt effective pushback.
