This would initially hurt those of us in the suburbs. However, it would further shift the tax burden to the core (higher relative property values) and create incentives for neighbourhoods to evolve and grow up. In the long run, it will make us all wealthier while solving big issues like housing.

In late 2023, Amsterdam introduced a 30 km/h limit. A large number of arterials were lowered from 50 km/h, 4,500 signs installed, 140 lights reconfigured, and 200 km of markings adjusted. Aiming to improve safety, liveability and accessibility, 80% of the road network is now at this critical speed.🧵

Some people also like to throw around the idea the bike lanes are ableist not fully understanding the spectrum of disability. Bikes are actually a form of mobility for some PWD and bike lanes further support that mobility. Drives me bonkers when ppl assume bikes are just for non disabled

4-5 million is about what we spend on the bike network per year. So roughly an equivalent cost to society of just one month of traffic collisions.

This move only saves the average residential taxpayer 84¢/month on their property taxes. $10/year. Meanwhile, the families affected by this will be paying an additional $372/year, per kid, on top of the $1248/year they're already paying. I bet many will just not buy passes and drive istead.

If #OttCity invest in year round cycling infra (and related) instead of the hundreds of millions we spend on roads we’d save money. Worried about your taxes? Start thinking about where it all goes and how we could do better, deliver better, live better.

Disappointed to have to re-up this piece.... [Removing the youth pass would come] out to $1,629 per year, a large burden on families with children and young people who are either below the legal minimum age to work or are only likely to find low-wage part-time jobs.
