On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast. The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me. But the food wasnât for detainees â it was for the staff.

In the last ten days, I agreed to review 6 manuscripts and declined 5 other. As an editor, I tried not to review more than 2-3 manuscripts a month. Now that Iâm on the other side, the enormous challenge in securing reviewers is top of mind. On both sides, itâs clear that the system is very broken.
