Another weekend, another round of "Can Matt keep this short story to 20 pages or is he just going to keep going like he usually does?" For the record, this was going to be a 13 page story, and it's already going to be at LEAST 20. SO I lost THAT round.

Finally put on @realgdt.bsky.social's FRANKENSTEIN while drawing this morning and I had to turn it off because I couldn't pull my eyes away from it. Just an absolutely gorgeous movie, even on the screen in my studio. Can't wait to watch the rest. When I don't have 10 pages of comics to draw.

Spending the day working out the last two books of one series while waiting for the contract for one series that's already completely done and thinking through the concepts for my next two series while also waiting to hear back about another series I really want to do. So, yeah...

Whenever professional creatives talk about how hard it is to make ends meet, there are a handful of people who inevitably pop up to say, "No one is entitled to making a living" or "Not everyone is good enough to make a living from art", and it makes me want to break things.

Very, very few comic book creators can survive on just the money they make from comics. It is an inherently unstable job and it is only getting worse as time goes on. Don't ever be embarrassed or ashamed of needing another job so that you can keep making comics.

Continuing my path to comic book superstardom by letting this October Girl tie-in short story I'm working on become a full on nod to C.S. Lewis's THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS.

Social media has a lot to answer for, but nothing can make your day more than your idols liking your posts about the things you're working on. That's just deeply, deeply cool.

One thing I'm really starting to struggle with is that, as far as I've seen, no American publisher is really set up to handle what I do. Left to my own devices, I write/draw/letter/color 80 to 100 pages of kids or teens comics a month. And there's just no model for that in the US market. (1/3)

Spending the day getting the next few stories for my Patreon set up. I think I'm going to do some shorter things for a little bit while I think through some career stuff before starting whatever my next big project turns out to be.

I'm sad about Mark Waid and @chrissamnee.bsky.social's Batman & Robin: Year One ending in a way that I haven't felt about a comic book in a long time. It is just an absolute delight of a comic. Wish it could have been an ongoing book and not a maxi-series. But I loved every panel of it.

There's no wrong way to read THE OCTOBER GIRL Book One, in my opinion, but reading it with a cat passed out on you is one of the more correct ways to read it, if you ask me.

Turns out I CAN write, draw, letter, and color an 18 page story in 3 days. No one is more surprised than me. Other than perhaps my long suffering frequent editor, Kristy.

As a male breast cancer survivor, I have a two word response to this and the second word is "you" and the first word is a word I try not to say too often publicly because I write and draw kids comics. But yeah... those two words. In bold print. And large letters.

As I have said many times before, Paul and Sean's run on Hellblazer is without question my favorite run of that book and one of my favorite runs of any comic ever, and I am freaking thrilled there will be an omnibus of it!!!

Amazon sold out of all their copies of THE OCTOBER GIRL Book One, then they got more copies in, and now there’s only 1 copy of those left!

One of my favorite people is basically live messaging me their reactions as they read through THE OCTOBER GIRL Book One and it is giving me life. My friends are awesome.

I have a complicated relationship with reviews, because I think even good reviews have a way of messing with your head, but nothing makes me happier than when my friends who I really respect like something I've done.
