Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization. This would be a public health disaster. If you are only wearing a mask at protests, please consider also wearing them elsewhere. The more people mask, the more we normalize masks and protect them against bans.

When someone dies of a disease like Covid or measles, the first question is often “did they have any pre-existing conditions?” People want to blame the victim. They want to believe they were vulnerable & therefore expendable. No one is expendable. Demand better from governments & public health.

If you are in danger unless you comply with a regime, you are in danger whether you comply or not

Make them tell you, specifically, what you're not allowed to do. Don't make changes you guess that they want. Don't offer them a menu of things that you infer they might be telling you not to do. Do the work you proposed, and received funding to do, unless instructed otherwise in specific detail.

During 2012-14, at least 16 science libraries in Canada were gutted. We were not prepared. Scientific books, records, reports, theses, journals, etc dating back decades were thrown out — literally in dumpsters. We still don’t know what was destroyed.

We need to learn to live and thrive without all these sugar daddy billionaire fantasies. It is a way of ignoring our own power.

Over the last two years, I've witnessed a lot of vile behaviour. There is absolutely no reason to be punching down, or letting your anxiety get the better of you and deciding it's "grants vs scholarships/fellowships". We can acknowledge yesterday's step was crucial AND that there's much more to fix.

If you have power in this system (PIs, I mean you) please DO NOT send hateful, patronizing, or generally rude messages to SOS. Especially not to the grad students and postdocs (who do this work for free). We unequivocally support increased funding for grants. We're on the same side.

SOS has taken up a significant portion of my life over the last 2 years. Today feels surreal. I'm so goddamn happy to know everyone who comes after me will be paid more & I hope it inspires others to fight for change - there was nothing special about us, besides how hard-headed and focused we were.
