Day 20 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Pink Orange Red - Cocteau Twins Tiny Dynamine EP 1985 Not a single as such, but the first track on an EP, and so many to choose from by Cocteau Twins. Some of their best work is on these mid-80s EPs.

I was wondering what would make my no.1 for #5DebutAlbums0509 but now I’ve listened again it’s got to be Daniel Land @danielland.bsky.social & The Modern Painters. Such a gorgeous dreampop album, do try if you’ve never heard before.

Day 19 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Blue Water - Fields of the Nephilim single 1987 The first Neph song I heard and bought, even though I’d been reading about them in MM pretty sure it was one of those extended clips on ITV’s Chart Show that made me make the plunge.

Day 18 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) You Made Me Realise - My Bloody Valentine You Made Me Realise EP 1988 The birth of shoegaze as we know it? Certainly very influential and rightly so. A glorious EP and the lead song is especially memorable (even more so live).

Pancake Day reveals a new, highly divisive intergenerational split - while older generations are loyal to traditional lemon and sugar pancake topping, younger adults are more likely to say they prefer Nutella or chocolate spread on their pancakes.

Day 17 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Elephant Stone - The Stone Roses single 1988 This song first got my Stone Roses attention, think I may have heard it on Yorkshire TV’s late night music show Transmission. A staple of indie discos thereafter.

Day 16 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Sensitive - The Field Mice single (Sarah 18) 1989 It wasn’t until 1991 that I heard this after buying the Coastal compilation, after initially hearing a couple of Field Mice songs on Glass Arcade, and it blew my expectations. What a song!

Day 15 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Precious Little - The Telescopes Precious Little EP 1990 One of the best songs the Telescopes produced imo, a perfect mix of noise and melody. The whole EP’s great as well, especially love Deep Hole Ends. The sound of my 1990 summer.

Day 13 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Anyway That You Want Me - Spiritualized single 1990 Their first single which launched Jason’s post Spacemen 3 career, and annoyingly I didn’t buy and wasn’t on the first album, but eventually got hold of on the Complete Works.

Day 12 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Half-Life, Remembered - Pale Saints Half-Life EP 1990 I featured this in my top 90’s songs, partly because it was less well known. I missed the actual release myself but heard it down at Bristol’s Kandi Klub and fell in love with it.

Swervedriver are coming to the UK. That's right. Only London announced so far.

Day 11 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Unfamiliar - Ride Today Forever EP 1991 Another shoegaze classic from March 91, just 6 months after the brilliance of Nowhere, and the first 3 EPs earlier in 90. Remarkable output from the boys, with the whole EP being top quality.

Staying up as usual for the #SuperBowl (although may go to bed at halftime and watch the rest early morning), and being LX (60) realised that it must be 40 years of watching it as I remember my first was XX (20) featuring that great Bears team destroying the Patriots.

Day 7 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Mesmerise - Chapterhouse Mesmerise EP 1991 Released about 6 months after Whirlpool, and I’ve always had a soft spot for this song. So does Robert Smith as well apparently. May sound a bit dated, but a summer feel for me.

Day 6 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) Gravity Grave - Verve single 1992 One of their early singles from their best era, released 8 months before A Storm in Heaven. Annoyingly for me only featured on the extended re-release which I missed and £100+ on Discogs.

Day 5 of #StandaloneSingles (reverse chronological order) In Mind - Slowdive 5 EP 1993 Lead track from a lesser known EP, released just a few months after Souvlaki and hinted at their change in direction towards Pygmalion another 18 months later. I love the Reload remix even more (remix EP).
