Another q for the stats people! People worry about collinearity (cf blog post below). Consider a scenario in which the collinear predictors are just controls to account for confounding. Including both of them doesn't impair the precision with which the effect of interest is estimated, does it?

Multicollinearity is the applied statistics version of quicksand - I was told that this was important, concerning, have spent years thinking about it, looking out for it, and yet have never once encountered a scenario in practice where it mattered all that much.

This is a really cool paper on the socialisation effects of studying at University. Surprisingly, the effects (moving in a leftward, liberal direction) are biggest for STEM students and those who move away from home to study, attend a single campus uni, and who live in ‘university towns’ and London.

The Swedish gov't claim to welcome foreign academics. But their actual policy is Trump-inspired: a poorly justified war on "woke," bizarre attacks on specific curricula, capricious cancellations of research funding, attacks on the independence of the universities, and regressive migration rules.
