Matteo Renzi 🇮🇹, Emmanuel Macron 🇫🇷 & Pieter Omtzigt 🇳🇱were all hailed as democratic saviors who would deliver a “post-populist” politics. In different ways, all three have done incredible damage to the politics in their countries, leaving the “populists” (= far right) even more entrenched.

This advertisement, aimed at law enforcement personnel to leave “sancionary cities” and join ICE, is running at several breaks of the Texas-Florida football game on ESPN in my area. One even explicitly targeted Atlanta law enforcement personnel.

I just saw this 2 minute (!) ad at the half-time break of a Ligue 1 game on Bein Sports. 🤯 Allegedly, more than 1 million people have taken this free propaganda course. Yet another reason why public education should be free — or, at the very least, affordable to everyone!

Based on 93% of votes counted in Czech elections, these are the results: * ANO 35.7 Spolu 22.5 STAN 11 Pirates 8.5 * SPD 8 * Motorists 7 3 far-right parties (*) together get slight majority of vote but coalition formation will be difficult. Again no traditional left-wing party represented.

No traditional left-wing party is currently represented in the Czech parliament… closest to the left are the Pirates, who only got elected in alliances with Mayors. Polls show far-right doing well but divided (notably, ANO, SPD, AUTO) — and trending downward recently.

It’s good to see the Greens go for an assertive and unapologetic progressive politics. It will pay off electorally, particularly long term (if they are consistent and Labour remains beholden to the “Populism Whisperers”).

Finally finding some energy and focus again to write on this short article with my grad student. 😊 It mainly introduces a typology of players for national teams (somewhat in line with civic vs ethnic nationalism) and analyzes how national teams at men FIFA World Cups have changed from 1930 to 2022.
